Taking the Great Big Crunch on Thursday March 5th, 2009

Monday February 23, 4:30 -6:30 (see below for registration details)

On Thursday March 6th, 2008 at almost 200 schools and community sites across Canada 26,123 students and teachers took one big bite towards healthy living through healthy eating. At 2:30 eastern standard time participants took a cross Canada synchronized ‘Great Big’ apple crunch. Students and teachers learned about healthy eating and local and global food systems while following the journey from the apple seed, to the harvest, to the market, to the core.

Join us for information on how you could get your class involved, classroom and school wide initiatives and other apple based education resources and activities.

All workshops are free and open to teachers, parents, students and community members. Participants will leave with resource packages and replicable, curriculum linked activities and ideas.

New Workshops in 2009

For Students

Foodprints
Do you want your students to learn about local food in an exciting and hands-on way? Field to Table Schools' "Foodprints" workshop looks at the ecological footprint our food choices have every day and helps kids understand how they can make eating more eco-friendly!

Ultra-Local
How lo-cal can you go? This workshop explores urban food production as a way to really shrink your ecological footprint. Students will get to design an urban food-scape and grow their own sprouts!

Preserving Tradition
Drying and pickling are important skills and a great way to extend the shelf life of delicious local produce. We invite you to join us in the FoodShare kitchen for a lesson on the historical significance of food preservation and an opportunity for students to gain hands on experience. Students will have a chance to sample a variety of preserved foods, try out some recipes and bring home a sample to share with their families.

For more information or to register your class for one of the Local Food Workshops please contact Mona Hashim at 416-363-6441 ext 247 or by email at mona@foodshare.net.
